Mysql

MySQL is a database platform that is responsible for storing the data behind interactive websites.  If you are familiar with Facebook, you'll know it stores lots of data.  It stores your name, your friends, your status updates, your wall messages, and lots of other data.  All of this data needs to be stored in an organized way, so that Facebook.com can pull up any piece of information at just the time you request it.  All of that data, for 100+ million users, is stored in the world's second largest MySQL database (according to facebook.com).

According to wikipedia, other large MySQL databases are in use at Flickr, wikipedia, Google, Nokia, and YouTube.  Sun Microsystems purchased MySQL in 2008.

Our development team uses MySQL in many of our web projects, and it provides a low-cost (free), robust, flexible, fast, and powerful database platform.
