Excel 2007 Conversion

Hi Jeff,

During one of your classes I learned how to do custom Menus in Excel 2003. I have recently migrated to Excel 2007. I have been unable to figure out how to create custom menus in 2007

Thanks,
John

Customizing Excel 2007

John,

Yes, that is one thing I too did not like about 2007.  Since they removed "menus" they also removed the ability to customize menus.  But, Microsoft did provide us with the ability to customize the Quick Access Toolbar.

The Quick Access Toolbar is located in the upper left, and has icons like Save and Undo.  There is a little down arrow to the right of the QAT.  If you click it, you'll be able to "Customize Quick Access Toolbar."  To create an icon for a macro, simply select "More Commands" from the menu.  Then, select Macros from the "Choose commands from" drop down.  You can then select your macro, and click Add.  You could also select "All Commands" to add virtually anything to the QAT.  You can activate the QAT icons with keyboard shortcuts too, using the Alt + number key combination.  For example, to activate the 4th icon in the QAT, press Alt + 4.

If you need more powerful customization, you can actually customize the Ribbon and all of its Icons, but it is pretty involved...there are whole books written on customizing the ribbon.

Hope that helps!!

Thanks
Jeff

I am gathering from your reply that you can not customize the icons easily so they are all different and by doing so you do not need to roll over the icon to find out which macro you are activating.

Customizing the Icon Image

 John,

Actually, it is easy to customize the little icon images on the QAT, yes.  Simply go back into the Customize Quick Access Toolbar.  On the right side, where you have moved your macro, simply highlight the macro and then click the "Modify" button.  A whole palette of icon images comes up and you can select one.   That way, each customized QAT icon image will be different and you can easily tell which icon runs which macro.

Thanks
Jeff
