Web Applications

Web Application - an interactive web based application used internally by employees or externally by customers or partners.  To explain a bit further, a desktop application is a program that runs in Windows (or other operating system).  Examples of desktop applications are Quickbooks®, Microsoft Excel®, and Outlook®.  A Web Application is an application that runs through your web browser.  Examples of web applications are Quickbooks Online®, Google Docs and Spreadsheets, and GMail.

There is a trend towards moving desktop applications to web applications, and from moving projects that have historically been stored in Excel workbooks to web applications.  One benefit is that no additional software needs to be installed on the computer running the web application.  In addition, the web application can run through a browser running on any operating system (Windows/Mac/Linux).  Updates are centrally deployed on the server, with no updates to install on all of the computers.
