One Laptop Per Child is the goal of one non-profit organization, the OLPC Foundation. They are making this happen by reducing the cost of manufacturing to about $100 or so. How? Through open-source software, scale, and clever hardware design. Developing countries can order them, and the minimum order is 1 million units or so. These laptops are not available to the U.S. market.
However, until November 26 they have a special Give One Get One program. If you buy two laptops, one will go to you and one to a child in a developing country. Total cost to you: $399, of which $200 is tax-deductible according to their website. The laptop is amazing from a technical specs standpoint. The screen can be viewed in daylight, battery can be recharged by a hand-crank or solar power, internet access is achieved through the wireless mesh network they create, it is very rugged, can be dropped or banged up, has video camera, microphone, speakers, rubberized keyboard, touchpad, and much more.
